“San Sebastian”
My painted wood carving of the martyr San Sebastian is a modern take on one of the most portrayed saints in religious art. At first look San Sebastian envokes the stereotypical feelings of a criminal outcast being handcuffed. Unjustly, we automatically assume he did something wrong. The image of San Sebastian with his back turned to us is a symbolic symbol of how many people feel, often ridiculed because of how they look, what they believe, sexual orientation, ethnicity or just simply who they are. Not meeting many of societies expectations one can feel imprisoned in their own body. The tattoo images of San Sebastian, Our Lady of Guadalupe, and Jesus represent ones higher faith and symbols of remaining true to the freedom of oneself.
